Baldhead Lean-To
Needs inspection, staining, clipping the clearing, and cleaning. Latrine needs inspected and cleaned.
This is the oldest structure in the CT system. It has held up well, but it gets a lot of weather. The front deck and plate of the lean-to could use three or four coats of weather-resistant oil-based stain to help the drying timbers shed water. Staining once a year would increase the life of the structure ten of fifteen years.
The latrine has open screen sides that probably should be boarded up to keep weather out. Otherwise the latrine will deteriorate much faster than it should.
Occasionally, we drop trees that begin to encroach on the view. More of this could be done to expand the view a bit.
NOTE: There is an opportunity to create another terrific view point on Baldhead Mountain. The lean-to looks south down the Phillips Brook Valley. If a little ridge trail was cut by the latrine and towared the east (skirting the summit just below the heigth of land), a short path could get out to the eastern face of the mountain where a bench could be set up and a fine view created by dropping just a handful of trees. There is a wonderful vista to the east that could be obtained with a day's worth of work by a few people.
