The COHOS TRAIL ASSOCIATION

Old Summer Club Trail - Stark, NH...This trail is open but needs a great deal of work... Needs clipping in mid-elevation hardwoods. Blowdown removal and debris removal. This fine restored old trail is one of the CT's more interesting woods paths. The lowest section is an old tote road that needs little clipping. However, young trees growing in tight confinement tend to break off and fall with regularity into this section. Each year these thin trees have to be cut away and thrown off the trail.
The trail leaves an old tote road where it ends and cuts through a delightful glacial erratic field. Needs minor clipping in here. Trail takes an open z-turn where it reaches a second old tote lane (growing in), then cuts off and begins to climb. There is a big blowdown just north of the old way. It has to be bypassed or cut out. The blazing in this area could be improved a good deal.
Trail soon reaches the first of two stream crossings. Clipping always needed in this section.
Beyond the second stream crossing, trail begins to rise in elevation in earnest and reaches an open hardwood area where young hardwood growth needs constant clipping over a distance of 800 feet or so. Trail soon reaches mixed softwood-hardwood and slabs the side of South Percy Peak. This section needs minor clipping and an occasional blowdown bypassed or removed. Trail is easy to follow and, so far, does not require erosion control. The trail is wearing well.
The path eventually reaches a steep granite face and rises up into a tight stony ravine. It requires a hand-foot scramble in one spot, but the section is a nice diversion from woods walking. No work needed in here now.
On top of the granite rib, the trail follows the unique outcropping next to a steep drop. Minor small growth blowdowns need to be removed in here periodically.
Trail drops off the rock rib and reaches the col between North and South Percy Peaks where it meets the South Percy Trail and ends. The trail adopter should check the 200 foot link here that runs up to the Percy Peaks Trail to be sure it is open and the blazing and signage is still in place.
